چکیده

We have studied the occurrence of stochastic resonance when a flexible polymer chain undergoes a single-file translocation through a nano-pore separating two spherical cavities, under a time-periodic external driving force. The translocation of the chain is controlled by a free energy barrier determined by chain length, pore length, pore-polymer interaction, and confinement inside the donor and receiver cavities. The external driving force is characterized by a frequency and amplitude. By combining the Fokker-Planck formalism for polymer translocation and a two-state model for stochastic resonance, we have derived analytical formulas for criteria for emergence of stochastic resonance during polymer translocation. We show that no stochastic resonance is possible if the free energy barrier for polymer translocation is purely entropic in nature. The polymer chain exhibits stochastic resonance only in the presence of an energy threshold in terms of polymer-pore interactions. Once stochastic resonance is feasible, the chain entropy controls the optimal synchronization conditions significantly.

Transition dynamics of biological systems on mesoscopic scales: E ects of exibility and uctuations

The biological systems described as soft matter on mesoscopic scales manifest, in contrast to hard (condensed) matter, a number of characteristics: complexity, exibility, and uctuations. Due to these, there arise a variety of conformational and nonequilibrium phase transitions at physiological temperatures, which seems to be relevant to biological functions. Also, the novel noise-induced phenom...

Passage times for unbiased polymer translocation through a narrow pore.

We study the translocation process of a polymer in the absence of external fields for various pore diameters b and membrane thickness L. The polymer performs Rouse and reptation dynamics. The mean translocation time (tau(t)) that the polymer needs to escape from a cell and the mean dwell time (tau(d)) that the polymer spends in the pore during the translocation process obey scaling relations in...

Anomalous dynamics of unbiased polymer translocation through a narrow pore

We consider a polymer of length N translocating through a narrow pore in the absence of external fields. The characterization of its purportedly anomalous dynamics has so far remained incomplete. We show that the polymer dynamics is anomalous up to the Rouse time τR ∼ N1+2ν , with a mean square displacement through the pore consistent with t (1+ν)/(1+2ν), with ν ≈ 0.588 the Flory exponent. This...

Effect of charge distribution on the translocation of an inhomogeneously charged polymer through a nanopore.

We investigate the voltage-driven translocation of an inhomogeneously charged polymer through a nanopore by utilizing discrete and continuous stochastic models. As a simplified illustration of the effect of charge distribution on translocation, we consider the translocation of a polymer with a single charged site in the presence and absence of interactions between the charge and the pore. We fi...
